1v1 tips: how to win head to head

In 1v1 you’re the striker and the keeper. Tips for winning head to head, from kickoffs and boost to picking your shots.

To win 1v1 in BonnetBall, remember you’re the striker and the keeper at once: there’s no teammate, so whenever you go for the ball, nobody is covering your goal. Win the kickoff or at least don’t lose it, keep your boost up, challenge only when you’ll get there first and shoot when the bot is out of position.

How 1v1 is different

There’s nobody to take turns with. You attack, and you’re always the last one back, so the game’s tip, “STAY BETWEEN THE BALL AND YOUR GOAL WHEN YOU ARE THE LAST ONE BACK”, applies all match.

1V1 is the “HEAD TO HEAD” card in QUICK MATCH, and it’s where everyone starts. Your very first match is 1v1 against a PARK bot, the easiest of the three levels, and the default quick match is 1V1 · CLUB · 3:00.

Win the kickoff, or don’t lose it

In 1v1, always go for the kickoff. If you hang back, the bot gets a free touch with your goal in front of it.

Every kickoff starts your car with 33.3 boost, a third of a tank and about a second of boosting, so hold BOOST from GO! and flip into the ball when you’re close. PARK bots set off late and never flip at kickoff, so boost alone usually beats them. CLUB bots flip and PRO bots speed flip, so against them you need a good flip too. If you can’t get there first, get there at the same time: a touch each is better than a free one for the bot. More in how to win kickoffs.

Keep your boost up

A full tank lasts three seconds of holding BOOST, and in 1v1 nobody covers for you while you go to fill up. So top up as you play: the game’s tip is to “DRIVE OVER THE SMALL PADS TO TOP UP BOOST WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR LINE”. Each one gives 12 and comes back after 4 seconds, and the corner pads refill you to full.

Take a corner pad on your way back to goal when it’s on your line. And don’t expect to wait out a PRO bot: its boost never runs out. See how boost works.

Don’t overcommit

If you dive in and miss, the bot has the ball and your goal is open. So challenge only when you’ll get there first, or when the ball is loose and the bot can’t reach it. Otherwise stay goal-side, shadow the bot back and wait for a heavy touch. How to defend covers shadowing step by step.

The same goes after a shot. Don’t sit and watch it: head back towards your own goal, in case it’s saved or comes back off the wall.

Shoot when they’re out of position

Your best chances come when the bot isn’t between the ball and its goal: when it’s chasing back towards its own net, or recovering after a jump, a flip or a missed challenge. That’s the moment to shoot, before it gets back in line.

Hit the ball with your nose. In the game’s words, “HIT THE BALL WITH THE NOSE OF THE CAR FOR THE STRONGEST SHOTS”, and flipping into it nose first is the power shot. If the bot is in goal, place it rather than blasting it: aim for a corner, away from where the bot is sitting.

Practise it

Start in QUICK MATCH at 1V1 against PARK, then move up to CLUB and PRO as you start winning.

Then try RANKED 1V1. Its bots are rated close to your own rating, and the KICK OFF tile shows it, for example “RANKED 1V1 · BOTS RATED ~512”. A new ladder starts you at 500, so your first bots sit between PARK and CLUB, and they sharpen up as you climb. Your first five matches are placements. The LADDERS panel sums it up: “WIN TO CLIMB · LOSE TO DROP”. Ranked matches last 3:00 with overtime, there’s no restart, and leaving early counts as a loss.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing every ball. You leave your goal open every time you miss. Fix: if the bot will get there first, drop back goal-side.
  • Turning up at the ball with no boost. Fix: take the small pads on your line, and a corner pad on the way back.
  • Shooting straight at a bot sitting in goal. Fix: aim for a corner, or wait until the bot comes out to challenge.

Is 1v1 good practice?

Yes. With no teammates, every touch, every pad and every decision about when to go is yours, so you find out fast what needs work. When you’re winning comfortably, try 2V2, “WITH A TEAMMATE”, where a bot teammate can cover for you and you take turns at the ball.
